Internet Business Lab: find customers for your work

Find customers and turn your skills, products, or services into an independent business. Internet Business Lab starts October 29, with 17 weekday lessons.

You know how to make something useful. How do you find people who will pay for it?

Maybe you’ve built an app and don’t know how to get customers. Or you sell your time, but every new project means starting the search for work again. You might have a skill you’d like to turn into a product, without knowing where to begin.

Internet Business Lab helps you work through the business side of making a living from your own work. We’ll look at who you can help, what to offer them, how to price it, and how to reach them.

Bring your product, service, or idea. Over 17 weekdays, you’ll apply the lessons to that same business, with a cohort working alongside you.

We start Thursday October 29 and finish Friday November 20. You get one new video each weekday, about 30 minutes long, and lifetime access to every lesson once it’s released.

When building more doesn’t bring you more customers

AI makes it faster to turn an idea into working software. But a finished app still needs people who understand why they’d use it and are willing to pay for it.

If you don’t know who those people are, it’s easy to spend another month adding features. You stay busy without learning whether you’re making something anyone needs.

The same problem shows up outside software. A designer can be good at their work and still struggle to explain their offer or find the next client.

That’s what we’ll work on here. Choosing a customer you can reach. Understanding their problem. Making an offer they can understand, then finding out whether they’ll buy it.

Try this with your own idea

Imagine a designer who wants to sell website templates. “Templates for small businesses” leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Which businesses? What are they trying to do? Where could the designer find them?

A more specific starting point could be a website template for independent music teachers who want students to book a trial lesson.

Now the designer has people to talk to and a problem to investigate. They can ask how teachers currently get bookings, what parents ask before signing up, and whether the website is even the part that needs fixing.

The answers might lead to a template. Or they might reveal that teachers would rather pay someone to set the whole thing up.

Take five minutes and write down one kind of customer you could help, the problem you’d help them solve, and where you could talk to a few of them. If you can’t answer one of those yet, you’ve found something useful to investigate before building more.

This is the kind of work we’ll do throughout the cohort. You take an idea from the lesson and use it to make a decision about your business.

Course outline

The lessons connect to each other. Choosing your customer helps you shape your offer. Your offer affects your price, the way you explain it, and where you look for buyers.

Here are the 17 lessons, in order:

  1. Welcome, I introduce myself and my story
  2. The life you want determines the business you can run (and want to run)
  3. Determine the market you want to be in
  4. Business planning
  5. Validation
  6. Tiny Marketing MBA
  7. Money and pricing
  8. Why people buy (and why people should buy your product)
  9. What to build
  10. Building the product
  11. How to find customers
  12. Launching
  13. Case Studies
  14. Content and discovery in the AI age
  15. Run the business with agents
  16. Customer experience
  17. Short game and long game

You’ll work toward a clearer offer and a practical way to test it with potential customers. You’ll also have a better basis for deciding what to keep working on and what to change.

Learn from the business I run

I’ve been running internet businesses since 2008. I sell my own work and deal with the decisions we’re covering here: what to make, how to explain it, how to reach people, and how to keep the business manageable.

The program ran as Solo Lab in 2023 and 2024. Internet Business Lab is its new name. Below, you can read what students from those earlier cohorts thought of it.

I can’t promise that your idea will make money. You’ll need to talk to people, test your assumptions, and do the work. I can help you understand the decisions involved and give you a structure for working through them.

What a weekday looks like

Watch the day’s video, about 30 minutes long. Then take its ideas to your own business. Some days that means writing down a decision. Other days, it means talking to someone or testing an assumption.

You can ask questions and share what you’re working on in the course community. You’ll see other people work through their own business questions too.

There are 17 lessons, released one each weekday from October 29 through November 20. Weekends give you room to catch up or put things into practice.

The videos are recorded, so you can watch when it suits you. Budget time for applying the lessons as well as watching them. Once a video is released, you keep access forever, including after the cohort ends.

Is this for you?

Join if you have a product, service, skill, or area of expertise you want to build a business around. You might be finding your first customers, rethinking an existing offer, or trying to make client work more sustainable.

You don’t need an existing audience or a SaaS product. A business based on services or expertise belongs here too.

If you mainly want to learn how to code, this course won’t cover that. And if you’re looking for a guaranteed income or someone to build the business for you, I won’t be able to offer that either.

What past students say

These students joined the program when it was called Solo Lab. Their comments describe those earlier cohorts.

“I have been following Flavio for many years and have always admired his tenacity and consistency, which has truly paid off. With SOLO LAB, there is no magic recipe, just hard truths. Flavio gets straight to the point, explaining how he managed to reach his current position and detailing what worked and what didn't for him. This insight has provided me with the motivation I needed to finally embark on my solo journey.”

Sébastien Viallemonteil

“SOLO LAB showed me the exact path I want to follow in my life. Now I know not only how to do this but also what mistakes I should avoid. Without this knowledge, I would probably never have tried solo entrepreneurship and would have been unhappy in my 9 to 5 job. I totally recommend it if you understand that it's only a guide, and the entire work you need to do by yourself.”

Bearnacki

“SOLO LAB gave me good value content and concrete learnings and experience. I enjoyed and appreciated Flavio’s transparency and his brutally honest approach. I think in SOLO LAB, once again, Flavio demonstrates that there are a few real aspects (20/80 Pareto approach) that move the needle when you want to achieve success as a solopreneur. Also, those principles are simple but not easy. Adding on top of that, they are not necessarily sexy but they work. Having realized that through the lessons, I felt guilty because maybe I kinda knew some of those principles but I was constantly looking for something more complex, sexy, or a new shiny object to delay to start putting in the work.”

Dorothy Silva

“Precious insights from somebody who has skin in the game, to switch from consumer to creator, while taking back your time. A very helpful guide to start from, to run your own lifestyle business. No bullshits, Flavio gets to the essentials, following the 20/80 Pareto principle.”

Salva

“I'm already getting a ton of value from the SOLO LAB. Flavio has the heart of a true solopreneur. He comes from the perspective of wanting to see others succeed and he's got the experience of having done it himself to a high level. In addition to the instructional material, which obviously comes straight from his heart, the community of students participating in the course is very active, asking and answering great questions. Finally, the challenge provides a structure to bring everything together to focus intention into action with the support of the rest of the community. For anyone considering starting to earn their own living on their own terms, I can't recommend it enough.”
