My own little corner shop on the Internet

This week I sent an email and inside it I wrote this paragraph about my upcoming Solopreneur Masterclass:

I’m not interested in having a boss, and I’m not interesting in being a boss. Or having people collaborate with me who then will influence all the decisions I make on my business because they now depend on me. Or I depend on them. Not interested at all.

What I’m interested in is, finding a tiny business I can run on my own, create my own little corner shop on the Internet, and happily run it forever. Creating something, a digital product, and having customers come buy it.

I almost forgot this until Peter Askew tweeted:

I like how @flaviocopes phrased this in his recent email update:
“finding a tiny business I can run on my own, create my own little corner shop on the Internet, and happily run it forever.”

I probably heard “little corner shop on the Internet” somewhere but I can’t figure out what’s the origin of this term. So you know, I’ll make it mine.

I asked ChatGPT and it wrote back it’s a “casual, friendly way to describe a small online business or website—usually run by an individual or a tiny team—that feels personal, cozy, and perhaps a bit handmade or niche”

Fits perfectly the kind of “vibe” I’m thinking when I use that phrase.

A lot of times we’re conditioned by the “venture capitalists” or “accellerators” into thinking we have to “change the world” or do some grandiose thing. That’s the kind of business that typically makes the headlines, where millions flow.

I don’t care.

All I want is having a business that gives me the freedom I want.

Freedom built around my personality. This is different for everyone.

I want freedom to take my laptop with me and go anywhere I want.

Doesn’t mean I do this all the time, I like staying home too.

But having the option is what I want.

Not being “forced” anywhere.

In the same way, not being forced to work at specific hours in the day, like it happens in a 9-to-5 job.

It’s not easy to create such a thing, mind you.

But it’s something worth trying.
