How to use Number Pantry

Number Pantry

Find calculators, enter your numbers, save and compare scenarios, and run the same calculations with calculum.

Free to read. You can explore the guide before buying the app.

On this page

Number Pantry contains everyday calculators that run on your Mac. Results update while you type, and each calculator explains its formula and assumptions.

Install and choose your country

After buying, connect your GitHub account in Polar and accept the invitation. Download the app from the customer releases, unzip it, and move it to Applications. You need macOS 15 or later.

Choose your country at the bottom of the sidebar or in Settings. This sets currency labels, number formatting and metric or US customary units. Enter your own amounts and rates; the country setting changes presentation and units rather than fetching prices or converting currencies.

Try a calculation

Press ⌘F and search for paint. Open the paint quantity calculator and look at its example inputs. Replace the dimensions with those of a room you want to paint.

The main answer changes as you type. Read the units beside each input before entering a number. A measurement in feet means something different from the same number in metres.

Below the result, use What changes the result to see how one input affects the answer. Open an example to try another scenario. How it’s calculated explains the formula, and Guide explains how to read the answer and which assumptions matter.

The app remembers your latest inputs for each calculator. Press ⌘R or click Reset to restore its example values. Press ⇧⌘C to copy the result and its supporting figures.

Save and compare scenarios

A saved calculation freezes the inputs, result and formatting at that moment. It remains unchanged if you later edit the calculator or select another country.

For example, compare two loan terms:

  1. Open the mortgage payment calculator and enter your first scenario.
  2. Press ⌘S to save it.
  3. Change only the loan term and save again.
  4. Open Saved in the sidebar and ⌘-click both saved calculations.

The comparison shows inputs and results side by side, with the changed values in bold. Compare calculations from the same calculator. You can also start with Compare With… on a saved item.

Use Rename… to give a saved scenario a meaningful name. Open in Calculator restores its inputs so you can try another variation without changing the saved summary.

Find calculators again

The sidebar groups the calculators by category. Recently contains the ones you opened. Press ⌘D on a calculator to add or remove it from Favorites.

Search uses calculator names, categories and the questions they answer. Searching for split, for example, finds several ways to divide shared costs.

Use calculum in Terminal

Choose Number Pantry → Install Command Line Tool… to install calculum. It links to the command inside your installed app.

Find a calculator and inspect its inputs before running it:

calculum search paint
calculum show paint-quantity

Then pass input names as name=value. This example uses metric units:

calculum paint-quantity perimeter=16 height=2.7 --country IT

Any inputs you omit retain the calculator’s example values. Add --json for scripts or -q for only the main result. calculum capabilities lists supported tasks.

Your data and updates

Favorites, input values and saved calculations live in ~/Library/Application Support/Calculum/library.json. Settings → Show in Finder opens the folder. Back it up to preserve your saved work.

Calculations work offline. Source links open your browser when you choose them. Results depend on your inputs and the stated assumptions; check those before using an estimate for a real decision.

Download updates manually from customer Releases and replace the app. Its command-line tool updates with the app because the installed command points inside it.
