How to use Tab Reunion

Tab Reunion

Install the Chrome extension and merge windows into the one you choose while preserving groups, tab order and pinned tabs.

Free to read. You can explore the guide before buying the app.

On this page

Tab Reunion brings tabs from your other Chrome windows into the window you are using. Tab groups keep their names and colors, and pinned tabs stay pinned.

Install in Chrome

After buying, connect your GitHub account in Polar and accept the repository invitation. Download and unzip the extension from the customer releases.

Keep the extracted folder somewhere permanent, such as Documents. Chrome runs the extension from that folder, so do not delete it after installation.

  1. Open chrome://extensions.
  2. Turn on Developer mode in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Load unpacked and select the extracted extension folder.
  4. Open Chrome’s puzzle-piece menu and pin Tab Reunion.

The extension runs inside Chrome. It has no separate Mac application to open.

Merge your first windows

Suppose your project research is spread between two browser windows. Switch to the one you want to keep, then click Tab Reunion in the toolbar.

Tabs from the other normal windows arrive in that window. Their order within each source window stays the same. Named groups move together with their colors, and pinned tabs remain pinned. Windows left empty after moving their tabs close.

The destination is the window where you clicked the button. Switch there before merging if you want a particular window to remain.

The keyboard shortcut runs the same operation:

SystemShortcut
MacOption + Shift + M
Windows or LinuxAlt + Shift + M

Change it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. If it does nothing, check that page first: Chrome may have left it unassigned because another extension uses the same keys.

Groups, private windows and popups

You do not need to ungroup tabs before merging. Each existing group moves whole, preserving its label and color. Pinned tabs also retain their pinned state in the destination window.

Regular and incognito windows stay separate. If you enable the extension in incognito and run it from an incognito window, it merges only incognito windows. Run it from a normal window to merge normal windows.

Popups and installed web app windows stay as they are. They are separate window types, so leaving them open after a merge is expected.

If a merge does not happen

Check that the extension is enabled at chrome://extensions and that you loaded the folder containing manifest.json. Keep that folder in place.

Make sure you are using a normal browser window with another normal window to merge. If only one is open, there is nothing to move. Incognito windows also remain separate unless the extension is enabled there and you run the merge from one.

If the toolbar button works but the shortcut does not, assign the shortcut in Chrome’s extension-shortcuts page. If you moved the extension folder, remove the broken extension entry and load the folder again from its permanent location.

Updates and privacy

An unpacked extension does not update automatically. Download the next release, replace the files in the same extension folder, then click the reload button on its card at chrome://extensions.

The released merge operation uses Chrome’s tab-group permission to move tabs and groups. It does not send your tab collection to a server. There is no Tab Reunion account or online service to configure.
